Religious Studies

The Religious Studies department is based in the Coggan Building with the other humanities subjects.  There are two teaching rooms, both equipped with ICT and DVD facilities.  Religious Studies is taught at all levels in the school, with all girls sitting the short course GCSE exam in the summer term of year 10.  The teaching is shared by one full time and one part time member of staff.

Key Stage 3
In the lower school girls learn to appreciate the values, similarities and difference of the major world religions. We incorporate visits to places of worship including a Hindu Temple, a Synagogue and a cross-curricular visit to St Paul’s Cathedral with the maths department.   Emphasis is placed on the life and teaching of Jesus which is the background required for girls to study the GCSE course.

GCSE
Religious Studies focuses on Religion and Life based on a study of Christianity and at least one other religion. This course is being studied throughout Years 9 and 10 so that students will have the opportunity to sit the examination in Year 10 and gain the recognised and valuable qualification of a half GCSE.

All the girls study the EDEXCEL short course, ‘Religion and Life’, focusing on the religions of Christianity and Islam. The units covered are 'Believing in God'; 'Matters of life and death'; Marriage and family'; and 'Religion and commuity cohesion'. The assessment is one exam in year 10. The majority of girls achieve A*-B grades. They develop an awareness of non-religious as well as religious responses to the issues and learn to evaluate alternative points of view.

The specification makes a contribution towards coverage of the programme of study for Citizenship. The skills developed through Religious Studies are relevant to a wide range of future studies and careers.
