 Chinese New Year Celebrations

To celebrate Chinese New Year, boarders were treated to a delicious Chinese meal. A selection of starters, including prawn crackers, spring rolls and various other nibbles were served, followed by chicken noodles, stir-fry and egg-fried rice, with a coconut mousse for dessert. A fruity cocktail accompanied the meal.

Everybody had an insight into their future as Miss Balsdon handed out fortune cookies. The dining hall looked lovely and the girls really appreciated the effort that some of the sixth form girls had put into making table decorations and place settings. The celebrations continued with a trip to Chinatown on Saturday 28th January. London had a buzzing atmosphere and the streets were beautifully decorated. Chinese cuisine, music and a performing dragon were enjoyed by both girls and staff as they joined in with all the festivities.

Ready Steady Cook!

The Ready Steady Cook competition involved the girls forming four groups of four. Each group was set the task of cooking a main course and a dessert, within the five pound budget. Lovely menus, place and table settings were designed and delicious meals served to the lucky judge Miss Balsdon.

Boarders Brighten up their Common Room

Our Junior Boarders’ Common Room was treated to an artistic makeover when 6 girls took to
the walls with acrylic paints.

Boarders Carrie Ha, Bonny Kong, Canny Lo, Ji Soo Choi, Alex Thogo and Kelsey South
thoroughly enjoyed creating the colourful and lively mural, which makes the room a much
brighter and more welcoming environment for the girls to spend their time relaxing and socialising.

Boarders Trip to Thorpe Park

Our boarders thoroughly enjoyed a trip to Thorpe Park this term. There was lots of screaming and excitement as the girls went on some of the more ‘adventurous’ rides. Wing, Elva, Natalie and Jazmine went on Tidal Wave four times just to perfect their photograph!

Here’s what some of the girls had to say about their day:

Jazmine – “My favourite ride was Tidal Wave, because it was exciting!”

Canny, agreed with Jazmine but added ‘it was very fast and very wet, and we all screamed!’

Sandra really liked Nemesis Inferno because it was “very fast, non-stop and really cool”. Venus and Carrie also enjoyed this ride the most. Venus found it “really exciting” as she laughed and screamed simultaneously! Carrie described it as “very fast and very loopy, making my hair go everywhere!”

Natalie and Christy both enjoyed ‘X:\ No Way Out’, as it was the first rollercoaster they had been on that went backwards in the dark. Christy suffered with a sore throat for days afterwards from excessive screaming and laughter throughout the day!

Elva had two favourite rides; Nemesis Inferno where “my legs were dangling in mid air and the ride was really twisty and turny!” and Tidal Wave, where she got soaking wet but was still laughing after her fourth visit.

Kelsey really enjoyed Zodiac with Ji Soo because “it was exciting to be spun around and was like a Ferris wheel that was upside down!”
Mrs Moore, Miss Balsdon and Miss Childs also had a really great day, but couldn’t wait to get back to school for a cup of tea and a sit down and some much needed peace and quiet!

Boarders enjoy AFLOS Firework Extravaganza

On 4th November, Boarders Bonny, Natalie, Wing, Elva, Sandra, Carrie, Mi Joo and Ji Soo put on their hats, scarves and wellies to watch the annual AFLOS firework display.  Despite the heavy downpour earlier in the day leaving the grass soggy, the crossing of fingers paid off as a dry, clear night set in. The lighting of the huge bonfire at 6.30pm marked the beginning of the evening, and the field quickly filled up, as many crowded in to enjoy the burgers, hotdogs, soup, hot chocolate and Krispy Crème doughnuts that were on offer around the warming bonfire. At 7.30pm the lantern lights were switched off and a fantastic firework display lit up the dark sky for the next half hour. I’m sure all will agree it was a truly wonderful evening.

“This firework display was the best one that I have been to since joining Luckley four years ago” Elva, year 11
The fireworks were such fun – I really enjoyed the display. The bonfire was fantastic” Bonny, year 8
“The fireworks were really colourful. It was nice being in the crowd with lots of my friends and my sister. The hot dogs were delicious!” Ji Soo, year 10.

  Korean Day

This was a real cultural treat for our boarders as they experienced an insight into the life, dress and the cuisine of some of our girls' home country. The girls watched and took part in presentations about the Korean culture, including how to bow to extended family and dignitaries and how to say “Happy New Year” in Korean.

Some of our Korean boarders also took part in the presentations:  Gi Na (Year 12) gave a demonstration of the country’s leading sport of Taekwondo, inviting one of her fellow students to try some of the moves.

Other girls demonstrated traditional games and showed a range of musical instruments, including a beautiful rendition by Eun Jung (Year 10) who played a pipe which her mother had made for her.

The girls then dressed up in stunning Korean costumes before all the guests were treated to a feast of traditional Korean cuisine The event was a great success and the girls and staff really enjoyed learning more about Korea.

"I really enjoyed the day. It explained a lot about the Korean culture and how it is celebrated. I really loved the Korean food"   Ji Soo, Year 9

"I really enjoyed trying on the costumes. I have just been to Korea and today I learned more about traditions and culture." Whitney, Year 13.
